Abstract

This subject has been designed to equip students with an understanding of techniques and skills required to collate, assess and critically interpret information for practical application in business environments. Business Data Analysis examines the role of contemporary analytical techniques used for modelling various situations with the objective of improving business operations and providing rich information for making recommendations. Beginning with an overview of mathematical principles, the subject will delve into tools used for collating and presenting data, both in numerical and graphical formats. While many of the techniques address quantitative data, students will also learn how to interpret qualitative information. This holistic approach is intended to encourage students to extend the mechanical application of analytical techniques into building skills required for critical judgment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to understand and use various fundamental concepts of mathematics, specifically relevant to business fields;
  • be able to choose, generate and describe appropriate graphs for various significant variables and functions operating in business;
  • be able to apply a range of techniques, including those incorporating modern IT tools to organize and analyse data, and summarise and present them in an informative manner through both graphical and numerical means;
  • be able to select appropriate data modeling techniques for specific situations using various criteria including limitations and assumptions in each technique;
  • be able to generate, analyse and communicate both qualitative and quantitative data in a range of business scenarios and convert these into meaningful information and recommendations for decision making purposes;
  • be able to explain the strategic value of data and analysis of this data for the purpose of informed judgments and improvements in business operations;
  • be able to explain key concepts in managing information and how organisations make effective use of information in decision making at strategic and operational levels.

  • Basic statistics.
  • Decision making models.
  • Qualitative data analysis.
  • Overview of modern tools in business data analysis.
