REC200 Principles of Ecotourism (8)

Abstract

Ecotourism is an industry sector of growing size and importance, with various models applied around the world to seek better social, cultural and environmental outcomes associated with tourism. This subject introduces the key concepts of sustainable tourism and ecotourism and explores the principles underlying ecotourism. The practical application of the ecotourism concept is considered within the Australian and Global context by exploring the potential impacts of ecotourism, and their management. Students are also given the opportunity to experience real nature-based and cultural tourism operations to enable their understanding of the application of ecotourism principles through a field trips.There is no residential school associated with this subject when taken by distance although students must undertake site trips as part of the assessment. On completion,students have the ability to apply a range of key fundamental ecotourism concepts and principles to ecotourism planning and operations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have a comprehensive understanding of the key terminology, principles, concepts and theory underpinning ecotourism
  • have a broad and coherent understanding of the ecotourism market and catalysts of its emergence, growth and continued development
  • be able to recognise and critically discuss a range of issues associated with use of natural environments for tourism
  • be able to identify the experiential, environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts of ecotourism and critically discuss their management
  • understand the fundamental concepts an principles associated with ecotourism planning
  • be able to indentify, analyse and critically discuss real issues and problems facing ecotourism operators

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to ecotourism and sustainable tourism;
  • Ecotourism definitions, markets and environments;
  • Environmental, experiential, economic and socio-cultural aspects of ecotourism; and
  • Ecotourism planning and management
