SPH511 Introduction to models of communication and swallowing practice (8)

Abstract

You will explore evidence-based practice, family-centred, client-centred, and inter-professional practice to understand how these guide speech pathology service delivery. You will use research skills to collect, synthesise, and critically reflect on literature to evaluate models of practice. You will engage with consumers of speech pathology services in order to understand how models of practice might apply in real situations and the impact that these have on the experiences of those utilising the services. You will observe and evaluate a local environmental context and develop goals for responding to identified needs based on knowledge of models of practice.

You will participate in a range of online learning experiences that offer the opportunity for you to share your ideas and knowledge and learn from others in interactive activities including completing structured discussion threads/topics, independent study, conducting a group interview, online library tutorials. You will develop awareness of strategies used to enhance environments to support communication in everyday, use creative and technical skills to communicate with non-specialist audiences.

To demonstrate mastery of these learning outcomes and learning experiences you will work with a group to interview consumers of speech pathology services and use this information along with independent research and your own critical reflections of collaborative practice and write a report about your learning. You will also use ethnography to explore an environment and the barriers and facilitators to communication within that environment. You will then identify strategies for supporting the communication of individuals within that environment and write a report that provides a summary of your investigations and recommendations.

You will use the CSU Learning Management System, Interact2, to engage in learning activities with your peers and utilise a range of online technologies and tools to engage research to inform your assessment tasks.

Assumed Knowledge

The content from SPH510 and SPH514 is assumed knowledge for this subject. Further, SPH512 is designed to be completed concurrently with SPH511.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Describe and critique models of practice including their strengths and weaknesses (evidence-based practice, family-centred, client-centred, interprofessional) to reflect critically on how models impact on clients' experiences of speech pathology services. This will be demonstrated by a report on models of practice and the impact on client experiences of speech pathology services.
  • Apply research skills (including literature searches, ethnography and interviewing) to investigate, analyse and synthesise data. This will be demonstrated in a written report on models of practice and the impact on client experiences of speech pathology services, and in a written report which outlines the barriers and facilitators to communication within a chosen environment, identifies strategies for supporting the communication of individuals within that environment and provides a summary of your investigations and recommendations.
  • Use a range of communication strategies to share results of research, including conclusions and professional decisions with a range of specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Justify goals and strategies based on evidence-based practice (independent research, reported client experiences and your own critical reflections).
  • Apply frameworks of reflective practice to reflect critically on individual learning and experiences. This will be demonstrated in a written report on models of practice and the impact on client experiences of speech pathology services.
