STA382 Research Methods & Statistics (8)

Abstract

Research Methods is a cornerstone subject in the preparation of Agricultural Business Management professionals. It will equip these professionals with strong enquiry skills and help them not just to value research activities, but also to participate in them. Students enrolled in this subject will be able to implement research proposals for funding hunting purposes; will acquire the basic background on analytical descriptive and inferential statistical methods and will value the opportunity of writing a scientific research paper, a report or a poster.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to distinguish the differences between descriptive and analytical thinking
be able to differentiate between the inductive and deductive paradigms of enquiry and the associated research methodologies to these two paradigms
have mastered and be able to recognise the integrative nature of the different components of the research process
be proficient in conducting literature reviews and setting up a research proposal
be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the spectrum of descriptive and inferential techniques to be used in the analysis of research data
be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of publication means for research purposes (eg research posters and scientific research papers and reports).

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Topic 1: Critical analysis
Topic 2: Paradigms of enquiry
Topic 3: The research process
Topic 4: The research project
Topic 5: Publication of research

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. Purpose:
- Present a basic introduction of the spectrum of descriptive and inferential techniques to be used in the analysis of research data.
- Clarification of components of the research process.

Activities: Computer based lectures and tutorials.
