Abstract| This subject will focus on social development as a process of social change designed to promote the wellbeing of a population as a whole. It is also an approach to social welfare which offers an effective developmental response to the situation of socially and economically deprived populations. It will emphasise elements of international social work and social welfare practice useful for socio-economic development such as self-help, mutual aid, conscientization, institution building, community social capital and developing community capacity. |

Understand concepts of growth and change as they relate to social development
Understand social development at both international (for example, the U.N. Social Development Summit) and national levels
Be able to apply social development concepts and principles to social welfare policy and practice in an international context
Be able to critically examine case studies of social development, particularly in the Asia- Pacific region.
