THL120 Practical Theology (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to the discipline of practical theology in which theory and practice are considered together across a range of areas of ministry, mission, worship and pastoral care. It examines its relationship to the biblical, systematic and historical sub-disciplines in theology. Students will develop an understanding of what is distinctive about Practical Theology and the range of methodologies appropriate to it.

  • be able to demonstrate initial skills in reflective practice

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The emerging field of Practical Theology: a new discipline; methodology; expanding horizons; reflective practice/practical reflection
  • Varieties of Practical Theology: introducing key thinkers
  • Engaging doctrine from practice: Case study 1
  • Engaging Practice from doctrine: Case study 2
  • Practical theology for the church
  • Practical theology for the community
  • Practical theology for the world

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. The residential school for this introductory subject provides an orientation to the subject matter, methodology, library resources, and research tools pertaining to the study of Practical Theology. Activities include lectures, library orientation and group work.
