THL445 Psychosocial and Spiritual Development in Older People (8)

Abstract

This subject provides a theoretical basis for understanding the ageing process from a pyschosocial and spiritual perspective for health care workers, clergy and pastoral carers. It introduces students to various aspects of the study of psychosocial and spiritual development in the later years of life. The subject pays special attention to theories of psychosocial and spiritual development and the impact of such development on role changes, study of narrative, life review and meaning in later life.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of psychosocial development in ageing;
- be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of spiritual development in later life, including the search for meaning in ageing;
- be able to give an account of faith stages in later life development;
- be able to evaluate and critically apply knowledge of faith stages to later life development;
- be able to evaluate critically relevant literature to recognise both the myths and realities of ageing;
- be able to give an account of the process of life review and narrative;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to evaluate and apply critically the process of life review and narrative when working with older people;
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the implications and relevance of role changes that frequently occur in later life.
