THL456 Ministry in Context: Rural (8)

Abstract

This is a specialist unit dealing with the characteristics and requirements of ministry in rural Australia. It involves a detailed study in a selected rural context balanced with reflection on the theological frame works which relate most closely to the needs of rural communities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the special characteristics of rural churches and of ministry in that context;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the current ecclesial practice of small faith communities in particular social contexts and to relate these critically to particular rural contexts;
- be able to reflect theologically, both orally and in writing, on pastoral, institutional and wider community situations that occur in the context of rural ministry;
- be able to demonstrate empathy with rural people and the nature of their particular concerns.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- An examination of the distinctive characteristics of the rural church and community. - Creating and renewing the life of small Christian communities: restructuring parish ministry. - The public life of faith of small Christian communities: the social sense of the gospel. - Theological responses to pastoral and social issues facing rural communities in selected geographical areas. NOTE: Throughout this component, each student's reading will focus closely but not exclusively on the context of their own denomination or intended area of ministry.
