Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the special characteristics of rural churches and of ministry in that context; - be able to demonstrate an understanding of the current ecclesial practice of small faith communities in particular social contexts and to relate these critically to particular rural contexts; - be able to reflect theologically, both orally and in writing, on pastoral, institutional and wider community situations that occur in the context of rural ministry; - be able to demonstrate empathy with rural people and the nature of their particular concerns. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics: - An examination of the distinctive characteristics of the rural church and community.
- Creating and renewing the life of small Christian communities: restructuring parish ministry.
- The public life of faith of small Christian communities: the social sense of the gospel.
- Theological responses to pastoral and social issues facing rural communities in selected geographical areas.
NOTE: Throughout this component, each student's reading will focus closely but not exclusively on the context of their own denomination or intended area of ministry. |
