THL485 Christian Theology and Religious Pluralism (8)
Abstract| The public forum in which the Christian faith is expressed is now characterized by religious pluralism. Talk about God, faith and religion is carried out in the political and social arena in a manner which presupposes diversity. It is now becoming more common for an exposition of Christian Theology to be conducted in the presence of the religious 'other'. This subject relates the changing nature of theology to developments in the public arena. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a familiarity with changes in the contemporary religious landscape of Australia;
- be able to evaluate critically the public rhetoric of tolerance, encounter and dialogue;
- be able to situate the contemporary debate over religious diversity inside a tradition of how the Christian faith has responded to other faiths;
- be able to demonstrate a critical familiarity with diverse models and typologies of how a Christian theology should relate to the presence of other faiths;
- be able to discuss critically the worldviews and contributions to society of faiths other than Christianity;
- be able to give an account of selected Christian doctrines in the light of the claims made by other faiths;
- be able to locate the importance of religious pluralism to debates in the public arena. |
