Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The program will be undertaken over two semesters with an intensive residential in Autumn focusing on research methodology and intial project design. Significant material concerning research methods, disciplined observation, reflection on practice, theological reflection, and planning strategies for ministry will be presented. The primary focus of the project will be the context of the student's own experience of ministry. The project will be a significant piece of research and practical exploration integrating academic study and the praxis of ministry. Within the project students will be expected to deal with matters relating to the ministry and mission of the church within their own context. As a rule, the project will fall into one of three broad categories: 1. An action/reflection project: This project involves the student participating (or observing), and reflecting upon a given issue within ministry using theological, biblical and social science methodologies. 2. An experimental/research project: This project uses an action research method and applies that method to a chosen ministry activity, aiming to be of assistance to those in ministry. It may seek to test a hypothesis or to investigate a theory of ministry which can be reported in such a way that adds to the body of literature in the area of study. 3. A creative project: This project involves the use of the creative arts--such as a novel, play, film, music, or a visual art piece--working to give imaginative expression to issues of ministry. The project will include critical reflection on the creative work presented.
