THL660 Masters Dissertation in Ageing and Pastoral Studies (32)

Abstract

In this subject students will implement a research proposal and write a dissertation on their completed research in ageing and pastoral studies. It is designed to enhance academic and professional development of students working in the field of ageing and pastoral studies and to equip graduates with analytic and conceptual competencies. The program allows significant flexibility to accomodate individual student preferences and/or professional requirements. Students will be encouraged to publish their research findings in appropriate journals.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a high order of skill in planning and implementing a research project;
- be able to demonstrate an advanced ability to communicate and contextualise an ageing and pastoral studies project;
- be able to validate awareness and sensitivity to ethical issues arising from the dissertation in ageing and pastoral studies;
- be able to produce a thorough, carefully reasoned dissertation which demonstrates an in-depth understanding of a specific area of knowledge or enquiry; and
- be able to demonstrate effective reference to the literature.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The supervisor will give guidance to the student in the following areas: - management of a research project; - literature reviews and surveys; - collection and analysis of data; - evaluation and interpretation of analysis; - written presentation of research findings; - professional issues associated with research, including ethics and supervision; and - preparation for publishing findings in appropriate journals.
