TRM310 Tourism Impacts, Ethics and Sustainability (8)

Abstract

This subject explores some of the ethical issues associated with tourism and tourism development by examining the impacts of tourism on the physical, social and cultural environments. In addition, efforts made to mitigate or minimise impacts will be examined. The student is challenged to think about tourism in the broader context of its role in the environments in which it operates.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the inter-relationships and sources of impact between tourism and the natural, cultural and social environments it interacts with,
- understand the significance and value of the natural, social and cultural environments to tourism
- value differences affecting the relationship between tourism and the broader community
- understand the ethical obligations of the tourism industry, tourist operators and tourists
- understand means of mitigating adverse impacts.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- natural and cultural resources as tourist attractions
- the social, environmental and cultural impacts of tourism
- an examination of the concept of ecologically sustainable development and how it affects the tourism industry
- tourism as a conflicting land use
- the socio-cultural impacts of tourism
- authenticity and the presentation of culture for tourist consumption
- host - guest interactions
- sex tourism, child sex tourism and other forms of exploitive activities
- the ethics of tourism from the operators perspective - codes of ethics
- the ethical obligations of the tourist
