VPA110 Visual Story Telling (8)

Abstract

This introductory subject covers both theoretical and practical approaches to visual storytelling utilised in the production of fiction and information video production. It introduces basic applications of television production, including the fundamentals of camera, sound, lighting, directing, production management, crew roles and scriptwriting used in the creation of effective video.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the 'how' and 'why' concepts of visual story telling;
- understand the fundamentals of camera operation and camera techniques to capture imagery;
- understand the fundamentals of sound acquisition;
- understand the fundamentals of lighting techniques;
- understand linear and non-linear editing;
- produce story boards, shooting scripts and program formats;
- understand the crew roles and production management process;
- produce a short fiction video demonstrating basic skills in preproduction, production and postproduction;
- produce a short information video containing the basic elements of television production.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- concepts of visual storytelling and visual language; - theory of television production; - crew roles and the production process; - camera operation and styles; - sound acquisition - sync and wild sound, voice-over; - lighting for television - interior and exterior; - principles of editing, linear and non-linear editing; - director/actor relationship; - director/script relationship; - production management
