WEL206 Facilitating Positive Behaviour (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces a range of approaches which enable workers to enhance the opportunities for people with developmental disabilities and older people with mental health vulnerabilities in community and care contexts to develop and maintain appropriate behaviours and achieve social and emotional wellbeing. Professional skills to enhance this development, focussing on the facilitation of positive environments, forms of communication and partnerships with these client groups, will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the bio-psycho-social model of healthcare intervention and its role in challenging behaviours
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of behavioural principles
- be able to demonstrate and understanding of behavior as a means of communication
- appropriately utilize the terminology of behaviours of concern, challenging behavior and positive behavioural approaches
- be able to demonstrate the skills to facilitate positive behaviours as a primary approach to practice and utilize behavior management as a secondary approach to issues of behaviour
- be able to demonstrate understanding of, and ability to utilize a range of behavioural change models
- assess the respective roles of behavioural, social, environmental, psychological, economic, political and personal aspects as influences on behaviour
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the potential roles of staff interaction as an influence on challenging behaviour
- be able to utilize the concepts of functional analysis, functional assessment and the use of charting (ABC - Antecedent Behaviour and Consequence) as tools for predicting, understanding and analyzing behaviours
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the potential impacts of challenging behaviours on staff, organizations and family caregivers
- appropriately utilize ethical, human rights and legal perspectives in own practice in relation to behavior change
