Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) will demonstrate specialised knowledge and critical understandings of a range of theoretical approaches used in early childhood education, particularly those relating to early childhood curriculum, pedagogies, content and approaches; understanding of the methods of inquiry and research in early childhood education, combined with understandings of the applications of these and implications for policy and practice; extended discipline knowledge combined with understandings of appropriate pedagogies for children aged birth to five years; leadership skills appropriate to the educational context; and the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and other professionals, within and across disciplines.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) will demonstrate awareness of national and international influences on early childhood education and the implications for research, policy and practice; firm discipline knowledge and methods of teaching relevant to successful implementation of quality early childhood education and care; strong understanding of and respectful engagement with children, families, and communities; active engagement with research informing and impacting upon pedagogies for diverse learner groups, analysis of social justice and ethical issues and the impact of these on teaching and learning; commitment to the refinement and articulation of a sense of professional identity, including understanding of the role they play in the development of young children; critical and evaluative thinking, effective oral and written communication, including competent application of various technologies.

Full-time 3.25 years (6.5 sessions)

Part-time 6.5 years (13.0 sessions)

Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years)

Full-time 4 years (8.0 sessions)

Part-time 8.0 years (16.0 sessions)

Normal course duration is the effective period of time taken to complete a course when studied Full-time (Full-time Equivalent: FTE). Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern for the actual length of study. Not all courses are offered in Full-time mode.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years)

To be admitted to the Bachelor of Eduation (Birth to Five Years) students must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Diploma of Children’s Services
  • Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years)
  • Three year Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching qualification from a recognised university

or an equivalent qualification deemed appropriate by the Faculty of Education.

CSU Credit Policy

Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years)

The credit arrangements have been organised as follows:

* Students who have completed the Diploma of Children’s Services (AQF 5) through a Registered Training Organisation within the past 10 years will be granted credit of 128 points in recognition of prior study. This entry level credit is represented as EDU14C Early Childhood Studies Credit .

* Students who enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) program with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching qualification from another University or tertiary institution will be granted entry level credit of 192 points in recognition of prior study. This entry level credit is represented as EDU15C Early Childhood Studies Credit.

Articulation

The Bachelor [Exit Point Only] and Bachelor make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

Graduation requirements

Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years)

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 256 points.

Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) [Exit Point Only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 208 points.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) consists of the ten (10) subjects required for the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) exit point, plus an additional six (6) subjects (two (2) of which are core and four (4) electives).

The order of subject selection is largely flexible, with the only requirement being that students complete the relevant curriculum subjects before undertaking professional placement subjects.

Notes:

• Students who have completed a Diploma of Children's Services will receive a standard entry level credit package of 128 points, represented as EDU14C Early Childhood Studies, based on prior qualifications.

• Students who enter the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) program following completion of the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) or equivalent at another University will be required to complete 8 of the subjects listed below. All such students receive a standard entry level credit package of 192 points, represented as EDU15C Early Childhood Studies, based on prior qualifications.
