Admission criteria

Entry to the Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology will be composed of an expression of interest and written application.

The following selection criteria will be adopted when assessing applicants via the written application and interview including previous case discussion.

1. Registered as a Dental Surgeon in an Australian State or Territory
2. Have at least two (2) years post graduation clinical experience
3. Demonstrate an interest in the use of dental implants

Standard CSU Credit regulations apply.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

DOH551 Introduction to Dental Implants and Basic Restorative Implantology (16)

Abstract:

The module will consist of two didactic and practical sessions, each scheduled over three days. The module will introduce the participants to the concepts of implant dentistry. The history and development of implant dentistry will be covered. The scientific basis of osseointegration will be discussed. The components and nomenclature used in implant dentistry will be introduced.Anatomy of the structures involved in implant dentistry will be covered. This will include both hard and soft tissues. Participants will be introduced to the various radiographic techniques used in treatment planning for the provision of implant supported prostheses.Impression techniques used in implant dentistry will be covered. The fabrication of models will also be covered. The design and selection of abutments and final restorations will be discussed. Communication with the dental laboratory will be discussed.Practical sessions will include the taking of impressions on models. The participants will pour models from these impressions. Temporary restorations will also be fabricated on models. Crowns will be attached to models. A full lower denture will be converted to an implant retained denture. Students will continue to treat their patient cases over a 12 week period of the session per subject.

Abstract:
The module will consist of two didactic and practical sessions each scheduled over three days. Didactic sessions will be held on the design, manufacture and provision of multi-unit prostheses. These cases include full arch rehabilitation. Complex occlusal issues will also be covered. Students will continue to treat their patient cases over a 12 week period of the session per subject.

Abstract:
The module will consist of two didactic and practical sessions each scheduled over three days. The module will introduce the participants to the concepts of the surgical phase of implant dentistry.
Basic oral surgery techniques and instrumentation will be covered. This will include particular reference to the instruments required for the placement of dental implants. Surgical anatomy will be discussed. The need for adequate infection control techniques will be discussed. The use of surgical guides in implant dentistry will be covered.
The integration process of dental implants will be covered in depth. This will include the influence of different surface characteristics of dental implants on the integration period.
Suitable protocols for prescribing radiographs will be covered.
Medical problems associated with implant dentistry will be covered. Suitable pharmacological protocols used in implant dentistry will be discussed.
Placement protocols, with and without basic grafting techniques will be covered.
Literature review sessions will be included. Candidates will be asked to present their own cases which they will be treating during the course. Each candidate will have to present at least one case during the course.
Practical sessions will involve:
• Construction of a surgical guide
• Suturing exercises
• The placement of dental implants in models

Students will continue to treat their patient cases over a 12 week period of the session per subject.

Abstract:
This module will consist of didactic an practical sessions over eight days. There will be two sessions scheduled over three days and one session scheduled over two days.

The sessions will cover steps involved in the provision of aesthetic implant supported prostheses, grafting (hard and soft tissue) and immediate implant loading. Advanced surgical techniques such as the placement of short implants and the use of piezo-electric surgery will be discussed.Protocols and materials available to aid in the augmentation of hard and soft tissues will be covered.Surgical complications and their management will be discussed. The pathogenesis and management of peri-implantitis will be covered. Limitations in implant dentistry will be discussed.

Practical sessions:

• exercises in soft tissue grafting on models
• exercises in bone grafting on models and animal specimens
