The Master of Arts (Honours) is a research program applicable across a wide variety of disciplines wherein the student, with the aid of a supervisory team, develops a proposal and undertakes focused research culminating with the submission of a thesis.Priority areas for the Master of Arts (Honours) by research and thesis include Australian history, Australian literature, communication and culture, drama, fine arts, justice studies and police studies, professional and applied ethics, psychology, sociology, rural social studies, social work, social welfare and social policy and theology.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Applicants should hold:

  • a Bachelors (Honours) with Class 1 or Class 2 Division 1 from Charles Sturt University; or
  • an award from another accredited tertiary institution, accepted by the University as equivalent to one of the above awards, and/or have demonstrated in study or professional performance potential to undertake research at a Master degree level.

Intending applicants should contact the Associate Dean Higher Degree Research in the Faculty of Arts to discuss the proposal before applying for admission to the program. In addition, applicants must complete a form describing their area of interest, which should accompany their application.

Admission to candidature is subject to approval by the Research Advisory Committee.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 128 points.

Course Structure

Students complete a major research project or portfolio in an area within the Arts and Social Sciences disciplines. As such students should contact the Associate Dean Higher Degree Research to discuss possible projects. In consultation with the Associate Dean and a supervisor, each student will be allocated a specific research subject code and will enrol in that subject for the period of his or her candidature:

  • HSS601 Master of Arts Research (Humanities and Social Sciences) PT
