The Graduate Certificate in Fire Investigation aims to develop and increase the knowledge of practitioners in the field of fire investigation. It aims to improve professional standards by the application of knowledge of sound investigative practice together with an understanding of fire dynamics, fire causation and fire setting motives. Course participants are exposed to current investigative best practice, the physics of fire behaviour and theories of deviance associated with fire setting. Assessment topics encourage students to apply theory to practice and exercise best practice in their own investigations.

As the two Masters subjects EMG505 and EMG506 are delivered over the course of two sessions, the actual full time duration for someone starting at the Graduate Certificate and completing all subjects would be 2 years.

Graduate Certificate in Fire Investigation

Admission criteria

Master of Fire Investigation

Admission to this course is open to those people who can demonstrate a genuine connection with fire services or an occupational requirement to study this area.
Applicants must also have:
1) completed or be able to demonstrate they meet all of the requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Fire Investigation or an equivalent Graduate Diploma completed at an Australian university or overseas equivalent, and
2) a minimum of five years experience in the field of fire services or a related area, as determined by the Course Coordinator.

Graduate Diploma of Fire Investigation

Admission to this course is open to those people who can demonstrate a genuine connection with fire services or an occupational requirement to study this area.
Applicants must also have:
1) an undergraduate degree; or
2) a minimum of five years experience in the field of fire services or a related area, as determined by the Course Coordinator.

Graduate Certificate in Fire Investigation

CSU Credit Policy

Master of Fire Investigation

Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate and/or Graduate Diploma will receive credit for these awards. Applicants demonstrating Fire Investigation experience deemed sufficient by the course coordinator will receive credit on an application by application basis.

Graduate Diploma of Fire Investigation

There is an articulation agreement with the NSW Police Arson course for one subject credit, JST415. QLD Fire and Rescue have a Diploma in Fire Investigation which is recognised with one subject credit, JST415.

Graduate Certificate in Fire Investigation

There is an articulation agreement with the NSW Police Arson course for one subject credit, JST415. The Diploma in Fire Investigation from QLD Fire and Rescue is recognised with one subject credit, JST415. The AFAC Advanced Diploma of Fire Investigation is recognised with one credit for JST415 and one elective.

Articulation

The Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 96 points.

Graduate Diploma of Fire Investigation

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Fire Investigation

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.
