The Master of Health Services Management is designed for practising and aspiring managers in health services who are seeking a formal management qualification to complement their experience and/or undergraduate qualifications. The course aims to help students develop their managerial competencies by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate efficiency, effectiveness and a high quality of service in performance at personal, department and organisational level. A high quality of conceptualisation is required to be demonstrated at Master level. It is expected, for example, that students will be able to demonstrate a capacity to evaluate the relevance of different conceptual approaches to management issues in the context of their own experience and workplace.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Health Services Management have acquired core knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective management practice and leadership in a health services context. They are able to examine the culture of health service delivery, and working from an evidence based framework, can make decisions with a consideration of contemporary and emerging issues in the funding, financing, regulatory and policy influences on managerial practice. Graduates can lead the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health service delivery.

Master of Health Services Management

Standard Entry

Students must hold an undergraduate degree and have at least two years' experience in the health industry. Students undertake 12 subjects (eight core and four elective subjects totalling 96 points).

Special entry

Applicants with a clinical qualification and health industry experience but who do not hold an undergraduate degree may apply to enter the Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management. On successful completion of that course (typically at credit average or better), you may then apply for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Health Services Management program. On successful completion of that course (typically at credit average or better), you may then apply for admission to the Master of Health Services Management.

Graduate Diploma of Health Services Management

Standard Entry

Students who hold an undergraduate degree in a health-related or business-related discipline and have a minimum of three years' experience in the health industry.

Special Entry

Applicants with a clinical qualification and health industry experience but who do not hold an undergraduate degree may apply to enter the Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management. On successful completion of that program they may apply for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Health Services Management, and will be awarded 32 points of credit for the Graduate Certificate subjects successfully completed.

Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management

Entry type 1
Health professionals (eligible for Australian Health Professional Registration Agency registration) with current health industry employment and substantial experience or business-related professionals with health industry experience but who do not hold an undergraduate degree.

Entry type 2
Students who hold an undergraduate degree and who are currently employed with at least two years experience in a health-related or business-related industry connected with health care.

Credit

CSU Credit Policy

Master of Health Services Management

Any student may apply for other credit on the basis of previous successful study in relevant subject areas at a recognised tertiary education institution. According to University policy, the maximum credit able to be awarded in the Masters degree is 48 points (equivalent to six subjects).
 

Graduate Diploma of Health Services Management

Credit may be awarded for subjects successfully completed in the Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management.

Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management

No special arrangements apply.

Articulation

The Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.
