The Master of Information Technology provides advanced training in Information technology for students from IT or non-IT backgrounds. Students undertake either the Master of Information Technology (12 subjects) or Master of Information Technology (16 subjects) depending on their previous experience and qualifications. For students who are already practicing IT professionals, the course encourages them to develop their existing knowledge in specific and cutting-edge areas of technology. For students with a non-IT background the course provides the technical knowledge to pursue an IT career. The Master of Information Technology is accredited at the professional level with the Australian Computer Society.

The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology provides graduates with the technical knowledge to pursue an IT career. For students who are already practicing IT professionals, the course encourages them to develop their existing knowledge in specific areas of technology. The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology also provides coverage of core topics relating to computer hardware and software, database systems, IT ethics, and project management. The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology is accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

Normal course duration

Master of Information Technology (with specialisations)

Full-time 1.5 years (3.0 sessions)


Part-time 3.0 years (6.0 sessions)

1.5 years study (96 points) is required for the course completion of the Master of Information Technology 12 subject course. 2.0 years study (128 points) is required for the course completion of Master of Information Technology 16 subject course.

Graduate Diploma of Information Technology

Full-time 1.0 years (2.0 sessions)

Part-time 2.0 years (4.0 sessions)

Normal course duration is the effective period of time taken to complete a course when studied Full-time (Full-time Equivalent: FTE). Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern for the actual length of study. Not all courses are offered in Full-time mode.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Master of Information Technology (with specialisations)

For entry to the Master of Information Technology applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution (or equivalent).  Applicants without a tertiary qualification may be admitted to the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Information Technology on the basis of professional attainment and/or work experience.  Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma, students will then be eligible for admission to the Master of Information Technology and receive credit for applicable subjects. 

 

Graduate Diploma of Information Technology

Applicants will normally be required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent. However, applicants with other academic and/or professional qualifications acceptable to the University will also be considered.

The Master and Graduate Diploma make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 96 points.

Graduate Diploma of Information Technology

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

  • four (4) subjects from the same specialisation. This will allow graduation with a particular specialisation - e.g., Master of Information Technology (Network Security); or
  • four subjects across specialisations. This will allow graduation with a generic Master of Information Technology

Completion of four (4) subjects in the same specialisation will allow graduation with a particular specialisation - e.g., Master of Information Technology (Network Security). Completion of four (4) subjects across specialisations will allow graduation with a generic Master of Information Technology

Note: It is possible to graduate with two specialisations by undertaking four subjects from two distinct specialisations. Subjects that are counted towards one specialisation may not be counted towards another. All students must undertake the capstone subject ITC571 Emerging Technologies and Innovation, regardless of whether they study 0, 1 or more specialisations.

Enrolment Pattern

Because of the flexibility of the course requirements, there is no prescribed enrolment pattern. Students may choose the order in which they undertake subjects, depending upon the availability of subjects and the meeting of any prerequisites or assumed knowledge. Students are encouraged to enrol in core subjects in the initial sessions and complete as many of these as possible before selecting specialisation subjects.

Accreditation

The Master of Information Technology has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the Professional level until 2017. The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the Associate level until 2017.
