ACT318 Theatre in Australia (8)

Abstract

Theatre in Australia is the second of two contextual subjects for students undertaking courses in theatre/drama. The focus of the subject is a number of issues regarding the theatre industry in Australia from the early nineteenth century to the present. In particular significant dramatic movements, playwrights and plays will be considered. In addition, a range of cultural, political and industrial developments which have had an impact on the industry are considered.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the significance of key terms in
Australian culture such as 'colonial' and 'postcolonial'
- be able to understand the history of Australian theatre with
reference to general developments and through a range of classic
scripts
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge of current issues in
mainstream theatre around Australia
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the recent history and
current state of regional theatre
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of governments in the funding of Australian theatre
- be able to demonstrate an awareness of recent developments in
indigineous and multicultural theatre
- be able to understand the contribution made by women in
Australian theatre from colonial times to the present

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Cultural history from the 19th century to the present - Theatre history from 1791 to the present - Different genres of plays practised in Australian theatre- melodramas, realistic plays, musicals, comedies - Commercial and subsidised theatre - Shakespeare and Australian theatre - Regional Theatre, especially RTC - Theatre and different groups in society - Women in theatre-past and present - Current issues in the theatre industry
