AGR722 Readings in Agriculture (8)

Abstract

This subject is a directed program of advanced reading, related to the students' perception of science and agriculture to their area of specialisation. Students will undertake critical review of the literature in their chosen field of study in liaison with subject teaching staff and their supervisory team. In addition to completing a literature review that will form, at least in part, the basis for their thesis project, students will also engage in active peer review and presenting and critiquing journal articles in seminar presentation format. This subject is designed to facilitate development of expert-level skills in literature critique, peer review, and written and verbal communication skills.

Students undertaking this subject should have a background in sustainable agriculture as demonstrated through meeting the admission requirements to the Doctor of Sustainable Agriculture, and a demonstrated capacity to work relatively independently to access and search a range of literature sources and search engines.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to systematically and critically evaluate relevant literature, philosophical approaches, and data collection and analysis techniques in their chosen research field;
  • be able to critically, objectively and constructively review the work of others, including their peers;
  • Be able to demonstrate expert level knowledge of their discipline area;
  • Be able to demonstrate high level academic written and verbal communication skills.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Students will undertake, with facilitation and guidance from both the teaching staff and their supervisory team, a broad critical review of the literature relevant to their intended thesis research project. Where necessary, students will receive guidance in appropriate literature search tools and databases, and have access in library training for research students. Students will also complete an initial brief synopsis of their work and participate in anonymous peer review of the work of others. Students will also be required to select a key journal article in their research area, and produce an online seminar presentation that discusses and critically analyses the article.
