ASC581 Professional Industry Practicum 2 (8)

Abstract

The purpose of this subject is to either prepare students to enter or progress in their chosen career in a supported manner that encourages personal and professional development. This subject allows students to take the knowledge gained in previous subjects and apply it within a business/profession context. The practicum consists of 15 days of placement within an approved business, during which students are expected to be actively engaged in activity for no less than 7 hours per day. During practicum, students are evaluated on a range of assessment tasks designed to encourage reflection of their own professional/personal development as well as improve their communication and interpersonal skills, technical competency, and self-learning and problem solving skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to work effectively and show formed linkages with the part of Industry towards which they have a career orientation;
  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of animal welfare in the animal and associated industries;
  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the ethical responsibilities of the animal and associated industries in relation to individual clients, animals, the community and society;
  • be able to participate effectively as part of a team;
  • be able to discuss the complexities of industry practice in context;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to identify problems within the workplace and demonstrate problem-solving skills;
  • be able to clearly identify personal goals and learning needs with regard to professional practice and development including an ability to learn independently;
  • be able to maintain a portfolio identifying practicum experiences and the learning that has taken place as a result of these experiences; and
  • be able to demonstrate professional conduct within a workplace.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Personnel and professional development, including interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving within a business/industry context
  • How to develop a professional portfolio
  • Workplace dynamics
  • Commercial acumen

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 15 days duration. Students are required to spend 15 working days within a single industry placement. This industry placement must differ to that undertaken in ASC580 Professional Industry Practicum 1.
