Abstract

CLS 302 Internship 3 is a pre hospital care work place learning subject. Students are required to complete 160 hours of block clinical placement in the ambulance environment. In this subject, students will be required to apply paramedic basic life support and advanced life support skills in a supervised clinical environment. Specific protocols, procedured and pharmacologies are detailed in the subject outline and the associated assessment items. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to participate and assist in patient care activities related to the role of the paramedic as per clinical record book objectives;
  • be able to complete an accurate health assessment of out-of-hospital patients with acute / chronic presentations;
  • be able to effectively manage the treatment of out-of-hospital patients with acute / chronic presentations;
  • be able to explain / demonstrate the concepts of basic life support, advanced airway management and drug administration.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The assessment and management of patients with acute clinical presentations;
  • The assessment and management of patients with chronic clinical presentations;
  • Problem solving approaches with patients with simple and complex health issues;
  • The knowledge and clinical application of basic life support, advanced airway management techniques and drug administration.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 15 days duration. Clinical experience is a compulsory and important part of the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) and the double degree Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic).  Students will need to complete a block clinical placement of 160 hours (varying shifts of 10, 12 and 14 hours) in the ambulance environment.  Students will have several placement sites to select from with ambulance work place sites available in NSW, ACT and Tasmania.  Students will need to demonstrate competency in a variety of different clinical skills and tasks in order to successfully complete this placement. Set workplace learning times are given to students to complete the 160 hours of placement. Students need to ensure that adequate preparation has been completed in order for the delivery of safe and effective patient care.  All pre-requisite subjects must be successfully completed prior to undertaking workplace learning.

This subject is a pre hospital care work place learning subject. Students are required to complete 160 hours of block clinical placement in the ambulance environment. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject. Students will be asked to select from several ambulance placement sites in which to complete their workplace placement.  Students will be required to travel to their placement site, and sites are located in New South Wales, ACT and Tasmania. Students will need to wear their placement uniform (purchased), helmets (supplied), safety vests (supplied), and safety glasses (purchased).
