CLS411 Paramedic Internship (8)

Abstract

This subject requires students to undertake clinical placements in an ambulance service setting. In this subject, students will have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision. It will develop the role of the paramedic as a clinician and build on the model of paramedic clinical competence in the context of paramedic clinical practice. During the period of 140 hours on clinical placement, students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their clinical skills in the management of patients with acute health conditions in a supervised clinical placement. Skills to be practised include communication and scene management and procedures associated with airway, breathing, circulation, posture and patient assessment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to review their clinical experience to identify suitable learning experiences to maintain learning needs relevant to the emergency service clinical environment and and negotiate opportunities to undertake these learning experiences within the clinical setting;
  • Recognise their role in the emergency clinical setting and display the appropriate professional demeanours and leadership capabilities;
  • Have undertaken appropriate paramedic clinical tasks and techniques in the paramedic clinical environment;
  • Be able to identify how to respond to real life problems in the emergency service clinical environment;
  • Be demonstrate an ability to assimilate information and communicate it clearly as appropriate for the emergency ambulance services setting;
  • Be able to apply relevant theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to the care of patients within the emergency ambulance services setting;
  • Be able to perform as an effective team member and work will other paramedic and health care professionals to provide appropriate patient care;
  • Be able to identify and apply a culturally sensitive approach to their own reactions and those of patients and their families to acute illness or injury experienced in and emergency clinical setting; and
  • Be able to describe the operational setting for paramedics across a different service sectors including the interface with related other operational services as well as emergency and primary health care teams within emergency-based emergency health care.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  1. Context of paramedic clinical practice in the out-of-hospital setting;
  2. Paramedic clinical skills;
  3. Components of human behaviour leading to personal and interpersonal conflict;
  4. Application of fundamental biomedical science concepts to clinical cases;
  5. Application of social sciences from areas of psychology, sociology and ethics to personal and community health and health professional roles;
  6. Application and understanding of the impact of patient variables on the clinical context;
  7. Ethical and legal issues within the clinical context;
  8. Clinician / patient relationship;
  9. Communication and interaction with patients and care providers; and
  10. Professional skills of a paramedic.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 16 days duration. The student is expected to spend 140 hours working on an ambulance.

Specialised Resources

Students are required to dedicate 140 hours of time in clinical placment in an ambulance service setting. This may require travel away from your home which may include costs of transportation, meals, and accommodation. Students are required to purchase a Charles Sturt University Paramedic Student uniform for this subject to wear on the clinical placement.
