DOH200 Clinical Practice and Theory 2 (16)

Abstract

This subject builds on the concepts and principles introduced in DOH100. The progression of oral disease and associated risk factors will be examined. Students will continue to develop their Oral Health Practitioner skills with an introduction to pain management, radiography and radiology application and nutrition analysis. Students will gain hands on experience as they are introduced to the patient clinic environment, so they can develop clinical proficiency in preparation for final year of clinical practice.  Clinical placements are a compulsory component of this subject. Students will provide preventative, educational, and therapeutic oral health care services to the community. Students will continue to build on their ethical and professional attributes, and begin to apply an holistic approach to patient care.

Enrolment restrictions

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to correctly utilise appropriate dental instruments and select materials and medicaments to perform dental procedures for oral health therapy practice
  • have the ability to undertake comprehensive oral examinations with 50% rate of accuracy , holistic risk assessments, care planning including implementation of effective preventive strategies and required treatment modalities at 2nd year degree level
  • be able to demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes at all times
  • be able to identify and apply effective communication skills and behaviour change modalities for all patients
  • be able to undertake initial phases of oral health procedures in a safe and ethical manner, providing due care to the patient. Modules taught and assessed will include local anaesthetic, radiography and radiology, pulpotomy, stainless steel crowns and extraction of deciduous teeth.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Dental Biomaterials and Material Science
  • Operative dentistry and restorative dentistry
  • Treatment planning for oral health therapy
  • Patient care (clinical placements in patient clinics)
  • Application of assessment knowledge (treating patients)
  • Instrumentation on patients (Hygiene Skills II, Therapy Skills II)
  • Introduction to Risk assessment, Care and Treatment planning; skills in radiology and radiography
  • Human Needs Model in phases of treatment planning
  • Pain Management, including local anaesthetics
  • Periodontics II
  • Cariology II
  • Recognition and documentation of oral abnormalities, considerations for treatment referral

Specialised Resources

Fully equipped simulated clinic and patient clinic. Registered clinicians must supervise students in these settings and sign-off clinical competencies when met.
