Abstract|
This subject will continue the development of basic dental diagnostic and clinical management skills related to both simple restorative (operative) and periodontal procedures in the clinical dental environment. The differential diagnosis of simple oral conditions and the management of simple restorative and periodontal procedures in the clinical dental environment. There will be a focus upon associated dental processes, the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of caries and periodontal diseases are presented in lecture and discussion sessions. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology and differential diagnosis of common oral conditions.
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic clinical procedures involved in the examination of the dental patient, including history, exam and diagnosis.
- be able to apply foundation knowledge of oral condition, and basic clinical procedures in a clinical environment.
- be able to demonstrate the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of dental caries
- be able to demonstrate the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of periodontal disease.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Operative dentistry
- Infection control
- Local analgesia and pain control
- Periodontal tissues and periodontal disease
- Cariology
- Oral radiology (principles, techniques and interpretation)

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 12 days duration.
Workplace Learning involves sessions in the clinical environment 6 hours per week over 12 weeks.
