Abstract|
This subject will give students an introduction to and opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the management of simple dental extractions incorporating diagnosis, treatment planning, execution and post operative follow up. There will be a special focus to be able to demonstrate appropriate understanding of the general principles of pharmacology with particular relevance to dental care, pain control and administering local anaesthetics. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of simple tooth extractions
- be able to demonstrate developing knowledge and skills relevant to the provision of simple safe local anaesthesia
- be able to demonstrate appropriate understanding of the general principles of pharmacology with particular relevance to dental care
- be able to develop within the students a foundation of professional knowledge coupled with the surgical skills to treat those cases which lie within range of their ability.
- be able to demonstrate a standard pattern of sound history taking, including medical assessment, examination, diagnostic analysis and use of diagnostic aids to provide a sound oral surgical diagnosis
- be able to competently treat oral surgery problems related to the practice of general dentistry

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- History, assessment,diagnosis and treatment planning
- Simple pain relief procedures
- Simple exodontia including extraction techniques and complications
- Infection Control and Work, Health and Safety
- Mechanisms of drug action and principles of drug behaviour
- Membrane receptors
- Minor oral surgery instrumentation,surgical removal of teeth and suturing
- Biopsies
- Wound healing
- Medical emergencies and management
- Analgesics and anti-inflammatories
- Systems pharmacology
