Abstract

This subject will focus on integration of specialist discipline subjects and on orthodontics.  Part of the subject will include implant dentistry.  The subject aims to develop skills in multi disciplinary case management for patients requiring complex clinical care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

-be able to demonstrate knowledge of and an understanding of basic orthodontics with relevance to general dental practice, with particular focus on diagnosis, case selection and referral of patients;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge of and an understanding of basic principles relevant to implant dentistry;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge of and an understanding of advanced restorative techniques;
-be able to demonstrate a competent and knowledgeable approach to multidisciplinary case management for patients with complex clinical needs.

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Introduction to orthodontics
-Basic principles in implant dentistry
-Advanced restorative techniques
-Multidisciplinary case based studies
-Diagnosis and treatment planning for orthodontics
-Craniofacial imaging in orthodontics
-Genetics and orthodontics
-Bone physiology, metabolism and biomechanics in orthodontic practice
-Biomaterials in orthodonotics
-Functional appliances
-Treatment of patients in mixed dentition
-Periodontal/orthodontic interrelationships
-Orthodontic aspects of orthognathic surgery
-The orthodontist's role in a cleft palate-craniofacial team
-Diagnosis and planning for oral implants
-Basic implant surgery
-Implant prosthodontics
-Patient slection for implants
-Implant selection
-Implant management
