EEB438 Teaching Literacy in Adult and Vocational Education (8)

Abstract

This subject covers skills and knowledge required to analyse and apply effective adult literacy teaching practices to meet the needs of learners in adult and vocational education contexts. Students will explore and critically analyse adult literacy theories and apply these theories through the development of teaching strategies relevant to their practice and their particular adult and vocational education context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Apply adult learning principles to the teaching of adult literacy;
  • Analyse, apply and critically evaluate the conceptual frameworks and theories underpinning adult literacy teaching;
  • Critically evaluate teaching approaches that support the development of students' literacy skills and knowledge in authentic and relevant contexts;
  • Determine the applicability of teaching approaches to specific needs, levels of literacy, learning styles, and contexts of those participating in literacy provision;
  • Select, develop and/or adapt effective learning resources to meet students' literacy needs;
  • Identify learning resources (from traditional and new and emerging technologies) that link to literacy learning outcomes and promote learner engagement with tasks and activities;
  • Source and evaluate materials relevant to social and cultural needs of students; and
  • Critically analyse and evaluate effectiveness of teaching strategies.

  • Analysis of students' literacy needs.
  • Matching strategies and resources to student needs through students' needs.
  • Assessment in adult literacy teaching.
  • Critical analysis and evaluation of approaches to literacy teaching.
