This subject explores contemporary theories of English language communication with a focus on identity and intercultural contexts. It investigates variables that influence interpersonal communication in a range of contexts, including the role of culture, gender, and age. This subject will support participants to analyse and develop their own interpersonal communication skills and intercultural competence, and learn how to manage miscommunication.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Explain theories and processes of identity and interpersonal communication within and across cultures;
  • Articulate variables that influence interpersonal communication in a range of contexts;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of miscommunication and conflict, and how to manage these aspects of communication;
  • Explain theories and models of intercultural competence;
  • Explain the influence of own and other cultural values and practices on communication in English;
  • Analyse and demonstrate skills and strategies to maintain effective communication;
  • Critically reflect on own intercultural competence and strategies for ongoing development.

  • Theories and principles of interpersonal communication
  • Identity in language learning and use
  • Understanding intercultural communication and competence
  • Variables that influence interpersonal communication and intercultural competence - language, culture, gender, age, context, power
  • Understanding competent interpersonal communication in English - listening, emotional messages, verbal and non-verbal messages
  • Barriers to effective interpersonal and intercultural communication and strategies to overcome miscommunication and conflict
  • Reflecting on and developing own interpersonal and intercultural competence
