ENG280 Performance Planning & Review - Junior Cadet (6)


In this subject students engage in management of their learning and professional performance.  They set their goals and plan their workload, negotiating a learning contract between themselves and their industry placement employer.  Students then use evidence-based reflection processes to determine if they have met their goals, adjusting their professional practice where necessary.  This subject also includes a summative evaluation including feedback from industry placement supervisors.  The expectations for this subject are that the student should be performing at the level of a junior cadet engineer.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and articulate the norms of practice within their work place;
  • be able to identify and articulate the key features involved in the effective planning and management of engineering projects;
  • demonstrate initiative through their work practices;
  • be able to practice their identity as a professional engineer;
  • be able to communicate effectively in groups and organization; and
  • be able to work effectively in teams with power differentials between members.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • reflective practice;
  • project planning and monitoring;
  • workplace communication; and
  • working effectively in diverse teams.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 10 day residential school. The residential schools for this subject serve as the synchronising face-to-face events for the student cohort during their first work placement.  Core events include: the conduct of the in-person elements of the Performance Planning & Review cycle, both the summative meeting and any intensive formative rehearsal / preparation; any hands-on laboratory experimentation that is required through the rest of the curriculum; development of leadership and mentoring skills through interactions with early-year student engineers;  participation in whole-of-course exhibitions of portfolio / thesis work

Specialised Resources

This subject will be completed while the student is on placement in industry.  Industry placements may require travel and/or relocation depending upon the nature and location of the placement.
