GEO305 Groundwater Hydrology and Management (8)

Abstract

In this subject students are introduced to a wide range of  practical and theoretical concepts pertinent in the science and management of  groundwater. Topics covered include: the water cycle, hydrogeology, groundwater recharge / discharge determination, groundwater conceptual modelling, an array of monitoring and sampling methods, groundwater microbiology, groundwater geophysics, groundwater pollution, and groundwater and soil remediation. Students are then introduced to a range of groundwater management approaches including resource allocation, quality protection, and sustainability. This subject has no residential school. On completion students will be able to critically apply a variety of conceptual and practical frameworks that are commonly used to underpin current approaches to addressing groundwater problems in a mining or primary production context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have an in-depth understanding of the key concepts associated with groundwater including groundwater and its relationship to the hydrological system, the movement of water in the earth, and the properties of, and flows associated with groundwater
  • have an in-depth understanding of theories and tools associated with estimation of groundwater flows and volumes
  • have specialised skills in the practical aspects of groundwater analysis and management
  • will be able to critically apply a variety of conceptual and practical frameworks that are commonly used to underpin current approaches to addressing groundwater problems in a mining or primary production context.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • groundwater and the hydrological cycle
  • the movement of water in the earth
  • the properties of, and flows associated with groundwater
  • Estimating goundwater flows and volumes
  • Approaches to anslysing groundwater analysis
  • conceptual and practical frameworks that underpin sound groundwater management
  • Case studies of current approaches to managing groundwater issues
