GRP103 Introduction to Digital Technologies and Design (8)

Abstract

This subject focuses on contemporary change in the design industry as traditional design tools are integrated with new techniques based on digital technologies. Students are introduced to computer technology and the range and implementation of software programs to achieve design solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to appreciate changes and developments in the contemporary graphic design industry
- be able to appreciate the role of, and maintain, a visual diary
- be able to consider specific design problems and identify software solutions
- be able to match software solutions with design briefs
- be able to produce initial roughs for ideas and concepts
- be able to work productively in a design team environment
- have a basic understanding of files and formats and their efficient saving and storing.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- the increasing role of technology in graphic design - options for visual presentation - design process options including traditional and digital - scope and range of appropriate digital software - basic approaches to digital file opening, closing, maintaining and storing - investigation and appraisal of commercial work - approaches and strategies for working commercially - group interaction - structures, processes
