Abstract

This subject studies the structure, organisation and design of information in multiple paged documents for print and web, taking into consideration the reader/user and the implications of software, technology, production processes and the language of visual communication. This subject will include collaborative practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of multiple page documents; their organisation and structure
  • be able to demonstrate (through application) an understanding of multiple page document design, formatting and production processes
  • be able to display various methods of organising and communicating information and/or complex data within a specified area
  • be able to effectively structure, organise and design information or data for a variety of audiences in a visually coherent manner
  • be able to work effectively and efficiently within a team environment

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The document as a whole - structure and organization
  • Master page layouts - grids, guides, page numbers and automated contents
  • Margins and columns - the relation between text and image
  • Text formatting - paragraph and character styles, indents and drop caps
  • Image formatting and placement - text wrapping, object styles and image quality
  • Approaches to information design/architecture – graphs, tables, table styles and pull outs
  • Exporting for print and web
  • HCI - Interface design
