Abstract

This subject takes a thematic approach to Australian history with an emphasis on social history. In particular, it explores many of the events, debates and developments that have shaped Australian history in the twentieth century.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

The subject will cover the following topics:
-Topic 1: Federation: birth of a Nation? -Topic 2: Australians at War (1914-1918 and 1939-1945) -Topic 3: 'Australia Unlimited'-building and settling Australia in the twentieth century -Topic 4: Australians at home and work -Topic 5: Inclusion and exclusion: Aborigines, Catholics, Women, Homosexuals and Migrants -Topic 6: Australian political extremism in the twentieth century -Topic 7: 'Reds under the bed'.
