INF543 Designing and Proposing a Research Project (16)

Abstract

The subject will introduce students to the contexts and research paradigms, within which research is undertaken in information studies. Methodologies, methods and techniques used to conduct research, across quantitative, qualitative and mixed research paradigms, will explored. Students will produce a research proposal, which will demonstrate an appropriate research design and plan to enable them to conduct their research project in INF544.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the research paradigms, methodologies, methods and techniques that they will need to conduct their research project in INF544;
  • be able to understand the ethical implications of their research, including how Australian ethics principles apply to their research design; and
  • be able to write a proposal that demonstrates understanding about how to conduct their research project for INF544.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Research traditions, paradigms and methodologies relevant to information studies
  • Principles of research design
  • Use of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods and their application to information studies
  • Refining research questions/hypotheses and selecting appropriate methods for research
  • Introduction to research ethics
  • Planning how to operationalise the research and developing the research proposal, including budgeting, timelines and project management
