INF549 Applying Leadership in Information Organisations (16)


This subject is designed to provide students the opportunity to synthesise previous coursework and their professional involvement and experience and to apply high level leadership skills such as consensus building and ethical decision-making.  The subject supplements and integrates previous learning and is designed to provide maximum exposure to various concepts and perspectives of leadership through observational experiences, critical thinking, and self-analysis. It is also designed to enable the demonstration of previously learned leadership and information theories, styles, and strategies. Students will apply their  leadership knowledge in a practice based project.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • critically analyse real-world leadership situations and apply leadership and organisational theories;
  • integrate previous workplace experiences, coursework, and knowledge of leadership and self with information that is learned about leadership and all other subjects during this course;
  • demonstrate appropriate and effective use of critical thinking skills and self-analysis;
  • demonstrate effective use of organisational writing, and oral skills that are appropriate for each assignment;
  • articulate an advanced and authentic understanding and positioning of leadership as it is applied to develop strategy and competitive organisational postioning; and
  • demonstrate the capacity to creatively initiate and manage healthy change.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Defining organisational purposes and goals
  • Designing and structuring communication
  • Articulating decision making and planning systems to achieve desired shared goals
  • Initiating and sustaining partnership and other relationships with stakeholders, beneficiaries and different kinds of staff, users and audiences in light of Porter's five forces model;
  • Planning and presenting a practice based workplace leadership project demonstrating strategy design and implementation
  • Frameworks to identify organizational capabilities;
  • Competitive advantage;
  • Organizational resources and goals;
