ISL333 Advanced Study of Hadith Literature (8)

Abstract

This subject builds on the knowledge and skills developed in ISL232. It involves the study of a selected range of hadith from the canonical collections, and will allow students to critically examine the text (matn) and reference (sanad) of these selected collections together with their commentaries (sharh). It will expose students to the most well known and relevant hadith and enable them to develop the ability to apply the hadith methodology developed in ISL232. The hadith selected will have theological, moral, spiritual and legal implications within the context of Islamic Studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse and evaluate critically hadith commentaries
  • be able to relate critically the level of authenticity of hadith to its social, theological and spiritual application
  • be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the criteria for hadith preference in legal applications
  • be able to investigate the primary source of hadith material in the analysis of religious issues
