ISL599 Guided Research in Islamic Studies (16)

Abstract

This subject is an independent guided study at postgraduate level on an approved topic in a chosen field of Islamic Studies. Students are expected to demonstrate competence in the use of appropriate research methodology together with advanced written and oral communication skills through the preparation and presentation of a substantial research essay on a topic agreed to in consultation with a supervisor.

Assumed Knowledge

Students will need to have a foundational knowledge in Islamic Studies by completing other subjects on Islamic Studies before attemoting the dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss, at postgraduate level, critical issues arising from study in a selected Islamic Studies theological field
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate academic engagement and communication skills through interaction with a supervisor
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the literature relevant to their research question
  • be able to reflect critically on the literature relevant to their research question
  • be able to demonstrate independent research, organisational and written communication skills through the preparation and presentation of a substantial research essay in a select theological field

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The supervisor will give guidance to the student in the following areas:
  • management of a research project
  • literature reviews and surveys
  • collection and analysis of data
  • evaluation and interpretation of analysis
  • written presentation of research findings
  • professional issues associated with research, including ethics and supervision
  • preparation for publishing findings in appropriate journals
