This subject is designed to develop and refine communication skills within the workplace. It focuses on intra- and inter-personal factors which underpin effective communication. It provides guided practice in oral, written and electronic communication which includes skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and use of associated technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the components of the communication model;
  • be able to explain the fundamental concepts of the communication process;
  • be able to practise, develop, refine and demonstrate written language skills so students are able to write clearly, correctly and concisely;
  • be able to discuss the impact of non-verbal communication;
  • be able to critically assess the main issues associated with ethical communication; 
  • be able to select an appropriate communication style and technique when delivering a message in different settings and to different audiences.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Fundamentals of communication.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; listening, speaking, directing and instructing, response styles, conflict resolution strategies, non-verbal communication, persuasive communication, intercultural variations.
  • Intrapersonal bases of effective communication: audience awareness, sender credibility, self-concept, empathy and assertiveness.
  • Written communication skills.
  • Functional writing techniques, everyday business writing tasks and special business writing tasks.
  • Business communication ethics.
  • Using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for effective communication.
