This subject examines the legal frameworks which govern the public dissemination of information. It explores historical and cross-cultural perspectives in the formation and enforcement of laws pertaining to communication. Communication regulation in Australian and international contexts is considered with an emphasis on internet and social media publishing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply knowledge of legal frameworks pertaining to communication
  • be able to identify the origins of and rationale for Australian and international communication law
  • be able to investigate, collate, and interrogate information to form judgments and opinions on the implications of a global publishing environment on the enforcement of communication law
  • be able to write and publish information across all media that conforms to laws governing communication


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The origin of laws pertaining to communication
  • Historical and cross-cultural perspectives on the balance between freedom of speech and regulation
  • Australian communication law: defamation, copyright, discrimination, privacy, intellectual property and freedom of information
  • The relationship between international and Australian communication law and enforcement
  • Current issues in communication law and reform
