JRN317 Research Methods in Journalism (8)

Abstract

This subject focuses on the research techniques and approaches required of professional journalists. Students research and process information from a variety of sources, and develop techniques for applying research methods to story packaging. Media law and multicultural and international perspectives in journalism are also examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of major research methodologies;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to assess research practices employed by professional journalists;
- demonstrate an ability to ultise research techniques that can be applied to contemporary print and broadcast journalism;
- be able to analyse and discuss ethical and legal issues raised in the course of journalism research.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- production processes from the conceptualisation and commissioning of stories through to their researching and presentation;
- quantitative and qualitative research techniques;
- opinion polling, surveying, and the use of focus groups;
- research techniques for investigative reporting;
- resources for researching including Census data and government publications;
- media law and basic ethical practice as it pertains to research techniques.   .
