JST518 Emerging issues and professional practice in policing and security (16)

Abstract

This subject is an elective subject which is a work-based assignment compiled from secondary research methods obtaining data from non-human information sources.  The student, in liaison with their subject coordinator and their employer, will choose a subject or issue to study that is deemed important for all these three stakeholders.  Once the subject has been chosen, the student will research relevant sources such as Internet websites, published texts, articles, statistics and other available sources along with policies, practices and procedures (within the context of the discipline that the student is studying) as appropriate at international, national, regional and local levels.  The student will prepare a report on the subject or issue which will be assessed for this subject and also be available for the information of their employer.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
 
  • Be able to demonstrate mastery of key theoretical underpinnings in the discipline they are studying, be able to reflect critically on these, and on their impact on professional practice
  • Be able to demonstrate mastery in the skills needed to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to apply established theories to novel bodies of knowledge or practice in the discipline which they are studying, and to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level
  • Be able to demonstrate mastery of the communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non specialist audiences within the discipline they are studying
  • Be able to demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship in the discipline they are studying

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Conduct work-based research (non-human data sources) in area of specialism
  • Produce review results of research
  • Write up findings of research
  • Develop recommendations from research conducted
  • Develop a presentation of the findings and recommendations for an industry based and/or a non-specialist audience
