JST536 Emerging Issues and Professional Practices in Trans-national Crime Investigations (16)

Abstract

The subject analyses the theory of transnational crime, the emerging trends and practices of transnational crime investigations in addition to the policing of these types of global crimes. This study focuses upon the existing forms of (complex and sophisticated) criminal activity such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal arms trade and financial crime and also examines emerging forms of criminality such as environmental crime, trafficking of cultural property, piracy and organ trafficking. Students will explore local education programmes along with the dynamics of operational, strategic and tactical demands for enforcement response and political and social influences.

Be able to critically analyse the emerging practices of transnational organised crime groups and investigative responses.
Understand and critically analyse recent developments within the criminological theory of transnational crime.
Demonstrate a mastery and critical understanding of the theoretical, legal and regulatory approaches to transnational crime.
Be able to critically analyse and reflect upon the growth of collaboration strategies between global enforcement agencies and other organisations in the fight against transnational crime.

Module 1 - Recent developments in international law and legal processes in the fight against transnational crime.
Module 2 - The cyber technologies world as a vulnerability and as an investigative tool in transnational crime investigation.
Module 3 - Future strategies, practices and policies to combat emerging trends in transnational crime.
