JWD206 Advanced Methodologies (8)

Abstract

This subject addresses the communicative potential of jewellery making by examining the use of alternative materials and techniques, with the majority of focus upon surface embellishment on metal and various other materials.
Students will exhibit a capacity to articulate complex themes and narratives through their design using the expanded manufacturing vocabulary available. In addition, students will be expected to independently identify and apply appropriate design and manufacturing processes to resolve a problem determined by the lecturer.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to understand and demonstrate a growing knowledge of material and techniques as the vocabulary for expression in the medium of jewellery
- be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of various construction and surface treatments, including, as examples: repousse; enamelling; inlay; anodising; patination; reticulation; milled surfaces; oxidisation; textured surfaces; mokume gane; etching; [etc.]
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of mechanised approaches to manufacture.
- be able to identify and complete the correct sequence of operations to undertake a manufacturing problem that mirrors a real life scenario often undertaken by professionals in the industry



Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Design process, materials and techniques as language - Mechanised approaches to construction. The following machinery and equipment will be addressed as appropriate: mill; lathe; puk welder; hydraulic press; casting equipment; [etc] - Surface as a canvas for communication of ideas, techniques and theoretical aspects - Problem solving and construction methodology - Occupational health and safety processes and implications relevant to the processes undertaken in the subject
