This subject introduces the technological features of instruments used in general diagnostic radiographic practice. Principally this subject deals with the equipment used in fundamental general radiographic imaging and processing. It covers the design, construction, operation and practical applications of specified devices, along with appropriate calculations and relevant regulations and standards. Quality assurance procedures and techniques are concurrently introduced and considered with each general type of instrument.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Explain and assess the basic design and practical working conditions of the instruments covered in this subject.
Critically assess the specifications and descriptions used in characterising instruments covered by this subject.
Critically assess the safe working conditions of the instruments in regard to radiation protection, electromechanical safety and be aware of appropriate regulations or standards.
Understand and appreciate the capabilities of each instrument such that maximum clinical utilisation may be obtained.
Understand the basic principles of Quality assurance/Quality Control and its importance in radiographic instrumentation and imaging.
Implement and assess a basic Quality Assurance program and be able to undertake basic quality assurance testing and measurements on the range of equipment covered by the subject.
Interpret and critically appraise technical reports and research material concerning the instruments covered in the subject.
Understand basic design requirements of instruments utilised in general radiographic installations.

Focal spot assessment. Cathode design and operation. Tube components. Heating and cooling characteristics and ratings. Housing types, mounts. Beam restriction devices. The X-ray circuit Electrical supply requirements. Basic components. Transformers. HT generation and HT waveforms. Exposure control kVp mA Time. Compensation. Interlock circuitry. Measurement kVp, time. Ancillary Equipment Grids construction and evaluation. Tables and tube supports Buckys and A.E.C. devices. Filters. Personnel/patient radiation protection devices. Positioning devices. Film Processing Automated processing systems; electrical, mechanical and chemical systems. Dark room systems and Daylight designs Silver recovery systems.
