MRS522 Quality Assurance in the Medical Radiation Sciences (8)

Abstract

This subject unifies principles relating to quality assurance, control and general medical imaging system performance. In addition to core materials, students will be required to study a discrete module of material which relates to their area of specialisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Analyse specific medical radiation quality procedures and approaches in terms of underlying general principles;
Analyse given problems regarding any topic listed under the heading : "curriculum" following, in either quantitative fashion or qualitative fashion as applicable and required, in order to deduce specific information that is required in the evaluation of quality;
Explain the underlying reasons that give rise to specific quality control and performance evaluation routines;
Identify and precisely describe key procedural requirements in the performance testing of specific medical radiation systems (according to study stream).

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: General Principles of Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Assurance versus quality. Performance testing. Ethos of quality assurance. System parameters and component parameters. Quantification of imaging system Performance Modulation Transfer Function. Resolution: contrast and spatial. Sensitivity. Dynamic range. Module 2: Managing Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Roles and responsibilities, legal requirements and standards. Optimisation of quality procedures. Personnel deployment. Cost benefit analysis. Module 3: Observer Performance: Relationship of observer to other elements within the medical imaging system. Physiological basis of observation performance. The quantification of observer performance: Receiver operating characteristics (ROC and FROC) analyses. Influencing variables. Diagnostic criteria. Module 4: Specialist Module in students speciality area: Quality Control Techniques in Diagnostic Radiography Quality Control Techniques in Breast Imaging Quality Control Techniques in Computer Tomography Quality Control Techniques in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Quality Control Techniques in Nuclear Medicine Technology Quality Control Techniques in Sonography
