NRS305 Discipline of Nursing: Inquiry and Research (8)


Students undertaking this course will develop their capacity to appreciate the importance of nursing and midwifery research to practice and health care. The significance of being able to appraise research and its utilisation in practice are highlighted. This course focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of the research process, different designs, and major data collection and analytical methods. From a practitioner’s perspective, basic descriptive and inferential statistics, various qualitative and quantitative methodologies and analysis, necessary to understand published research, are explored. It includes ethical and cultural issues related to research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.    be able to explain the relationship between research, theory and practice and its contribution to nursing, midwifery and indigenous health. 2.    be able to retrieve and analyse publications that provide evidence for nursing, midwifery and indigenous health practice. 3.    be able to demonstrate understanding of ethical and cultural considerations relevant to research activities in the primary, secondary and tertiary health care contexts. 4.    be able to outline the research process and explain its components. 5.    be able to discuss different approaches and designs as well as their suitability to nursing, midwifery and indigenous health research. 6.    be able to describe the various components of a research project. 7.    be able to demonstrate skills for evaluating published research and its applicability for practice. 8.    be able to discuss how research can be applied in nursing, midwifery and indigenous health practice to improve patient/client care. 9.    be able to apply and evaluate evidence in nursing practice for best practice. 10.  be able to integrate and apply, with direction, knowledge, skills and principles for clinical reasoning in nursing practice.


The subject will cover the following topics:

1.              Introduction to research:

(a)     Origins of knowledge in nursing and the relationship of science, theory and research

(b)     Introduction to the differences and similarities between qualitative and quantitative approaches

2.       The research process:

          (a)     Research problem/purpose/question/hypothesis
(b)      Different levels of research
(c)      Conceptual/theoretical frameworks
(d)      Literature review
(e)      Research designs, qualitative and quantitative approaches
(f)       Triangulation and issues in establishing rigour/trustworthiness

3.       Ethical and cultural considerations in research:

          (a)     Social justice and equity principles
(b)      Protecting the rights of individuals and groups

4.       Methods of data collection:

          (a)     Observation, interviews, questionnaires and bio-physiological assessment methods

5.       Introduction to statistical methodology as applicable to the presentation of data:

                   (a)      Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics
(b)      Epidemiology in primary, secondary and tertiary health care contexts

6.       Introduction to qualitative data and analysis.

7.       Appraising guidelines for quantitative and qualitative research studies:

          (a)     Utilisation of research findings in nursing practice
          (b)     The role and application of evidenced based practice in nursing

8.       Epidemiology and primary, secondary and tertiary health care.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school. For distance education students there is a compulsory 2 day residential school
