NRS313 Professional Nursing: Transition to Practice (8)


This subject will examine a broad range of contemporary issues and trends that impact on nurses and nursing within the Australian health care context, such as risk management, patient safety, clinical governance, scope of practice, with an emphasis on the importance of professional communication, leadership and management. The focus of this subject is to prepare the graduating nurse with the necessary skills to transition from a nursing student into a registered nurse who is industry ready. This includes preparing the student for professional registration and professional interviews. It will ensure the student is equipped with the appropriate tools such as an e-portfolio, and interview skills to successfully transition.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and explain the nurses' scope of practice, including legal obligations and constraints (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 8.1, 8.2).
  • be able to present an e-portfolio which meets ANMAC standards of maintaining a record of involvement in both formal and informal professional development (NMBA 1.1, 2.1).
  • be able to critically analyse incidents involving patient safety and make appropriate recommendations(NMBA 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 3.2, 6.4, 9.1, 9.2, 10.2, 10.3).
  • be able to use the principles of clinical governance and quality improvement to undertake a root cause analysis related to nursing practice (NMBA 1.3, 2.2, 2.4, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 4.1, 7.4, 7.8, 8.1, 10.4).
  • be able to demonstrate leadership and management strategies by providing recommendations for changes in health care practice to address quality issues (NMBA 1.3, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 3.5, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 9.2, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4).

  • Module 1: Professional Aspect of Transition to Registered Nurse (RN) - E-portfolio. Interview skills. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Module 2: Interprofessional Aspect of Transition to RN - Team work and delegation. Conflict resolution. Clinical governance, quality improvement, accreditation. Incident management systems.
  • Module 3: Clinical Aspect of Transition - Planning, problem solving and decision making. Evidence-based practice. Contemporary initiatives.
  • Module 4: Professional/personal Aspect of Transition - from student to teacher. Stress management. Work/life balance.
  • Module 5: Professional Opportunities - Lifelong learning strategies. Promotion and diversity.
